The new patrons of Victorian painting were often men of industry. They encouraged a new-look realistic approach to subjects which reflected the nature of Victorian society at all levels. Fildes, Holl and Herkomer contrast with Tissot in the kind of society they portrayed, and they created uniquely strong images of their times.
